Ahhhhhh. December 1st.

The holidays are in full swing, our tree is up and lighted, and my very best friend turns 38 today. Sorry, Scott, it’s not until after 50 that we start keeping mum about age ;)

I have waxed poetic about the love of my life on his birthday (here, here, here, and here ) many times before, but what you haven’t seen is a video that is near and dear to us (maybe one of our favorites EVER?) and we’ve been keeping secret for a year. Maybe not as much of a secret, but as something that Scott and I cherished together without making public before now.

On December 1st last year, I got a call from the doctor’s office with the result of our genetic testing along with the gender of our baby. We had been waiting for weeks, and the fortuitous timing of that phone call meant that Scott received the news about Roux on his birthday, the biggest gift of both our lives.

Rather than popping balloons, gender cakes, all that stuff – we opted to return the favor to someone who gave ME one of the biggest honors ever. When my sister was pregnant, she and her husband Evan allowed me to be the first to know what they were having, and in a whirlwind epic surprise trip and showing up with an “It’s a Girl!” balloon in the middle of a taco shop in San Antonio, Texas, I was able to give them the moment they had most anticipated.

Fast forward 18 months. Scott and I asked Adrienne if she would be willing to accept a call from the nurse and to, in her own way, reveal to us the gender of our babe. That night after I gave the doctor’s office her number, she got to work and prepared an amazing reveal that we now have documented for all time.

Scott and I live our relationship in videos. The exchange is almost 9 years long, including Scott proposing to me with a video and releasing our Save the Date via video. We have only published a handful of our videos on our Youtube page, but it’s something we both love to do. Of course, Adrienne followed suit and made the most perfect video (to the music that I walked down the aisle on our wedding day) and our beautiful niece gave us the news of a lifetime.

We took the last photo of the two of us before finding out who would complete our family, and sat down to Facetime the Squires in Texas so she could capture our reactions. The first video is the one Adrienne made, and if you’re really curious, our reactions are posted below…

I knew it was a boy in my heart, and to know for sure is a moment I’ll never forget. I can’t imagine a world without that little boy, and so every December 1st, we will raise a glass and toast not only the birthday boy, but our little dream boy.

We waited weeks after that call to even announce we were having a baby, and months later in mid-February we shared the our news of a little baby boy. But tonight, it’s all about the first man in my life. Happy birthday Scott – let’s snuggle our little guy tonight and relish in the best birthday ever. Cheers!
