6 years ago today, Scott and I were pinching each other under the table in a new restaurant in the middle of Chinatown, DC.

We had only been really blogging for three months and had MAYBE 100 Twitter followers. The only people reading our blog were related to us by blood, and we were convinced that DC Minute would be a journal for us to keep to remind us of our adventures as a young dating couple.

We sat in that restaurant, wondering why anyone would have bothered reaching out and extending an invitation to US – newbie writers, amatuer “foodies”, completely unaware of the momentum that blogging was giving food and drink scenes all across the nation. We were really just madly in love, dating and capturing our excursions with an iphone 4 and a whole lot of excitement.

That night catapulted us into 3 years of blogging in our nation’s capital. The year we left to move back home, DC was named Food & Wine’s City of the Year. We didn’t know it at the time, but those three years introduced us to some of the best plates and drinks in the country and cemented a passion that has us dreaming REALLY big today.

Tonight Scott and I sit on our bed, laptops on laps and fingers tapping away simultaneously – one of us working feverishly on a brand new cocktail menu, the other bouncing between designing said menu and fondly reflecting on how we arrived here. At this moment. I truly remember that first dinner in DC as if it were yesterday – the night I ate alligator for the first (and only***)  time, wore a chef’s coat and was invited to play in the kitchen, and I remember looking at Scott wondering if they had made a mistake inviting us. They wanted some other couple – one with clout, prestige, and experience.

Tomorrow night Scott will step behind his own bar, one that was forged by a small hope in DC that someday he could craft his own cocktails, design his own dream speakeasy. Our little personal blog gave us the means and the confidence to actualize a space that we could call our own, to create together every day in the hometown that we love so much.

What an incredible 6 years it has been, and we are so hoping we are lucky enough to experience another 6 together living this life. What will full circle look like then? Only time will tell.
