My first memory of Medina’s hospital is how hot it was waiting in the parking lot. My grandmother, Joanne Zimmerman, was wrapping up her last day of nursing and our family gathered in the lot, waiting to congratulate her on retirement.

When Alix and I returned home, we tried to soak up stories about Medina. We loved learning about those who came before us and the actions of our family members. One of the stories we learned about is of George A. Bowen. In 1905, his son was crippled by a carriage. Without a local hospital they commuted to Rochester for care. As the president of S.A. Cook, Bowen began a fundraising effort to bring a hospital to Medina. He raised money through other business owners and organizations and would eventually be known as “Doctor” Bowen because of his constant trips to visit the hospital patients. My grandmother’s retirement from the hospital became even more meaningful when I learned that George Bowen was her grandfather.

Supporting the hospital during these challenging times whether through promoting #MedinaStrong shirts, taking food to hospital staff, posting supportive messages on social media, or making contributions – all are appreciated. That’s why Alix and I are so excited about the upcoming virtual trivia fundraiser with the Orleans Community Health Foundation. The foundation exists to provide quality support and tools to the Orleans Community Health network, something that is needed even more during these difficult times.
