Lunch Date: On the Border Mexican Grill and Cantina
The last week I was in Virginia before retreating home for the summer was spent soaking up every last second I could with Scott. Though I was already on summer vacation from school, he still had to trek into Falls Church every day for work. So naturally, I found a few excuses to steal him away for lunch to squeeze out that extra bit of time. It was the perfect opportunity to extend my guacamole hunt a little farther, and try out On the Border Mexican Grill and Cantina in Tysons Corner.
Though we are typically more inclined to try local spots than a chain, I have to give credit where credit is due when I talk about On the Border. It’s open, comfortable, and not your run-of-the-mill Mexican chain. The food was great and the service was equally so. And when I read “Guacamole LIVE!” on the menu, that was all I needed to be sold on this lunch date.
Honestly, the guacamole made to order table-side was wonderful. The chips weren’t overly salty and I like that our server allowed us to salt to taste – far too many restaurants, even the best, over-salt their guacamole and pair with much-too-greasy chips. Thankfully, this wasn’t the case and we got a whole lot of bang for our buck. If you are looking for a quality bowl of guacamole on your trip into Tysons, this is the place.
Little did we know but On the Border just released their new Border Bowls which we were encouraged to try. Filled with fresh ingredients, there are 4 options from which to choose: chicken, steak, shrimp, and my choice – the Portobello mushroom. Scott chose the shrimp, which was Mesquite-grilled and brushed with an incredible cilantro lime chimichurri sauce. All of the options are gluten free and perfect for a light lunch without leaving too stuffed. I always know lunch is a win when Scott can function the rest of the day at work.
And because of Scott’s insane sweet tooth, there was no leaving before we enjoyed dessert- we ordered the traditional flan and a few sopapillas. Can you blame us? Look at em.
Next time you are in Tysons Corner for the day or see a neighboring On the Border, definitely give in to the guacamole Live! and a new Border Bowl. Totally worth the trip.
Cheers!
