Date Night: Founding Farmers, DC
There is nothing worse than when a restaurant doesn’t live up to the countless reviews you’ve read – Founding Farmers in DC was not one of these places. After admiring both photos and reviews of what’s become a staple in the DC restaurant scene, we finally made it to Founding Farmers and believe it lives up to all the hype. Their focus on preparing locally sourced foods is only the tip of the iceberg, and their dedication to the American farmer is both noble and necessary. In short- we love it.
Washington, DC boasts good restaurants, but an increasing number of great restaurants also. Making it even more critical that each restaurant experience is what you had hoped. If one dish falls short it could jeopardize your entire opinion of a restaurant. Finding a restaurant that matches great food and a desirable ambiance might not be difficult, but is it good enough to get you to come back a second time? When it comes to Founding Farmers in DC the answer is a resounding yes.
The atmosphere and design reflect a true farm-to-table concept complete with rustic wood decor and natural elements (giant clouds above your head when walking in…different, but OK by us) and the oversized modern windows allow enough natural light to fill the space and let the look of the food reign supreme. All in all, a great marriage of modern/rustic design.
The drink menu is extensive and it should come as no surprise that at the very top are a selection of farm-to-still cocktails consisting of their proprietary spirits. There are additional cocktails and a “dealer’s choice” option for those feeling trusting. Though the menu is heavier on the cocktails there are plenty of wines and beers as well.
To be honest I was a little nervous about the food. The menu is large and this isn’t always a good thing, because you quickly learn a restaurant can master only so many items. We started with a couple appetizers before the entrees came out. For starters we ordered the Jonny’s BBQ Spcied Nuts, Devil-ish Eggs: Classic, and Fried Green Tomatoes. Each of the plates were ideal for sharing and it turned out to be more than enough to go around.
As for entrees we went with the Chicken and Waffles (the entire “Signature” items list should be considered), the Fried Chicken Salad, and the Chicken Salad.
Though it took us awhile to get through that revolving door, Founding Farmers is on the short list of places we’ll head back to in the near future. Check it out and let us know what you think.
Cheers!
