Brunch Date: Ulah Bistro
We usually stay local for Sunday brunch, but it’s not often we can turn down the chance to head into one of our favorite DC neighborhoods. This past Sunday, we had the opportunity to check out Ulah Bistro for our favorite meal of the day.
Located steps from the U Street Metro Station, Ulah Bistro offers up modern American cuisine in a trendy neighborhood setting. In addition to a wood-fire oven, Ulah offers outdoor patio seating as well as bars located on each of its two floors.
With perfect weather Sunday morning, we opted for the outdoor seating and started our meal off with a Bloody Mary and mimosa. While perusing the menu we immediately noticed the French toast we had heard so much about. We decided to finish our meal off with that and start with slightly more breakfast-like starters.
No matter the meal, the best restaurant experiences are when you immediately leave and are left talking about how wonderful everything you ate was. That’s exactly how we reacted to our brunch. Al had the Eggs Florentine, which was no surprise with her love of all things Eggs Benedict. She commented on the fact that the eggs were cooked just the way she would like them, and that the hollandaise sauce wasn’t overwhelming to the dish. Though just a side piece of the entire dish, the fresh orange slide is a nice addition to the whole.
In hopes of ordering something slightly different I opted for the breakfast pizza, which comes with 3 sunny side up eggs in the center. Though I rarely bring food home with me, this was one of the times that I asked for a box so I wasn’t leaving any pizza behind. After our waitress recommended we try the French toast for a dessert, who could say no?
I don’t normally eat French toast at brunch, but when I do I want it to be awesome. Ulah Bistro offers up one of – if not the best -French toast I’ve ever had. The raspberry coulis that’s drizzled over top can only be compared to what warm raspberry sherbert would taste like. The honey mascarpone easily helps to replace the need for syrup that’s also provided as a side. Though neither of us had a complaint about any of the dishes we ordered, I beg you to give the toast a try. If you’re anything like I am, the added carbs might require a nap to follow -and if that’s the case you’ll likely dream about the need to have more of that French toast in the near future.
Overall, wonderful atmosphere combined with an equally delicious menu means that Ulah Bistro will definitely see us again!
