That is our weekend recap – lots of wine, and a little pneumonia thrown in for kicks.

Scott spent the weekend pouring wine for Barboursville Vineyards at Mt. Vernon Estate, while I spent the time apart to nurse what I am hoping is the tail end of walking pneumonia. Middle school =germs galore. Even though it wasn’t our typical weekend, we still found a few opportunities to relax together and get out of the house….

Barboursville

Friday night was not much to write home about, as Scott and I passed as ships in the night and finally reconnected after his stint pouring. I’m going to let the cat out of the bag and admit we are indulging in a little 90s nostalgia in the form of a beloved teenage drama – Dawson’s Creek.  As I spent the last week sick in bed, I raided my DVD archives and found a familiarity in one of my favorite adolescent series. When Scott got home and found me watching Season 2, he admitted he had NEVER seen the show. Strike one. So, Scott and I have been binge watching Dawson’s so I can give him the proper 90s education he apparently missed.

Saturday morning was spent concocting brunch together in the kitchen, as our weeks have been so full that our kitchen has been suffering neglect. We cooked up an awesome omelette and hash browns, which was more than enough to fill me for the day until Scott got home from the festival. However, before he left, he had a little time to test out his Christmas present with the first batch of bread from his breadmaker. He was STOKED, and it was an excellent first attempt.

Because I’ve been sick, Scott and I knew the weekend would be low-key, but he was adamant that we make room for a short date and head to The Majestic in Old Town to try their table-side guacamole.  It definitely held its own in Alexandria and had great flavor, but I missed the traditional crunchy tortilla chips that usually accompanies the dish.  The Majestic paired the guac with soft corn tortillas that reminded me of a sopapilla, which is a daring departure from the typical. I also enjoyed my first ever ‘fried green tomatoes’ – and as far as I’m concerned, that took home Best of the Night. It was delicious and I’ve already decided the plate is as good as the movie.

Sunday is our brunch-out day, and we opted to head back to Union Street Public House so Scott could round out the Benedict menu and sample the Crabcake Eggs Benedict – two thumbs up. Delightfully light, and a great blend of all flavors. I took a bite and approved, though I stuck with my usual classic Benedict. After strolling around our neighborhood for a little bit, we spend the afternoon binging on Dawson’s until Scott had to leave for the final night of the wine festival. A relaxing Sunday…

Many of our weekends come and go with a tight agenda and plans made weeks in advance. But this weekend was a great opportunity to rest and heal while Scott got to dabble in one of his favorite hobbies. Already looking forward to the upcoming 3 day Memorial Weekend! What are your plans???
