If you haven’t given Virginia wine a chance, now is the time.
From Cabernet Francs to Viogniers to Roses to big Meritage blends, Virginia wine is something you should do more than pay attention to. At the recent 2013 Wine Star Awards, from Wine Enthusiast, two individuals in the Virginia wine industry were named big winners.
Today, Gianni Zonin is the head of the largest private wine enterprise in Europe. In 1976, he made a monumental investment becoming a pioneer in Virgina’s wine industry with his purchase of Barboursville Vineyards in Charlottesville VA. Zonin was awarded with the Lifetime Achievement Award this year for his years in the wine industry both in Europe, Virginia, and worldwide. Barboursville is one of our favorite wineries in VA, and as a hobby I help them with multiple wine events throughout year which keeps us well stocked and enjoying their wine all year long.
From someone who has spent their lifetime in the wine industry as Zonin has, to the Rising Star of the Year award which was awarded to Eric Trump of Trump Winery, Virginia was well represented at this year’s awards. As many of you know, Trump acquired the former Kluge Estates a couple years ago and have continued crafting quality wine, while using their existing strength to bring more attention to the wine being made in Virginia. We tried several wines from Trump this past year, especially enjoying the Rose over the summer (runs about $10). Our favorite wine continues to be their Blanc de Blancs, which is a good sparkling wine no matter where you go.
If Virginia wine is good enough to be poured at the British Embassy to celebrate the Royal wedding, at White House dinners, and for the Queen of England, aren’t they good enough for each of us?
Congrats, Virginia Wine!
