5 Places to Get Cocktails in Alexandria
A year ago, Alix and I sat in our living room contemplating where to get cocktails in Alexandria. New restaurants were opening, but one thing that disappointed us was the lack of inventive and quality cocktails in our neighborhood. Don’t get me wrong, the area has some long-standing and incredible bars, but in the past year, several new establishments have upped the ante on the cocktail scene here in Old Town.
We’ve made it a point to try all of the cocktail bars people hold in high regard, and have created a list of the must-try cocktail bars in Alexandria. There were several places we thought would make the list, but after a couple visits we couldn’t find a drink we really loved – or even liked, for that matter. The next time you’re looking for the best craft beverages the area has to offer, try one of these 5 favorites:
The one place that’s always been on our list is PX. When the blue light is on, you know this classic speakeasy is serving up some of the best cocktails you’re likely ever going to have. The gin and tonic goes beyond what you’re used to and Al sticks to all of their sparkling cocktails, which have never failed to impress.
After finally visiting Magnolia’s on King we’ve been back with several friends, several times. The Magnolia’s Old Fashioned with pineapple syrup easily makes the list of best cocktails in Alexandria. Sadly, with the season change a couple of our favorites have disappeared, and Al is missing the most beautiful cocktail she’s ever had. But that just means we have to return soon to scope out the new menu…. twist our arm. ;)
Who knew a doughnut shop could also house one of the best speakeasies around? There should be no surprise that Sugar Shack’s Captain Gregory’s made our list, and after one visit, it’s hard to say it’s not the best. From the entrance to the ambiance, this location had us thinking of our next visit before finishing our first drink. Our only regret is we couldn’t try more of the drinks, but that only helps solidify a next date.
Only a few steps away is a neighborhood favorite, Mason Social. Though it might give off the vibe that beers and burgers are the main choice of fare, the cocktail program is one we’ve returned for time and again for Friday Happy Hours. The winter menu was impressive and the recent changes look even better. The Mason Punch remains on the menu, but we have yet to sample the new goods. I see a happy hour date in the near future…
Sometimes it’s better to stick with a classic, and that’s exactly what Brabo does. We love the food, and perching on the stools at that gorgeous bar is always a wonderful way to spend an evening. When deferring to the bartenders they claimed to have one of the best-classic daiquiris – and they do! There are several cocktails that should catch your eye, including several juleps, but feel free to defer to the bartender, and they won’t steer you wrong.
It’s only Friday morning, but this list has us dreaming of 5 o’clock. Where do you get your cocktails in Alexandria??
Cheers!!
