Brunch Date: Evening Star Cafe
Our stomachs were screaming as we headed out to the grocery store, so instead of waiting to get home to make lunch we asked Twitter where we could get a bite to eat in the Del Ray area of Alexandria. We already had brunch on our mind, so when Evening Star Café was recommended by a couple people it was quickly the winner. Thanks to an empty table in the back corner we were seated right away.
If you’re in the Del Ray area, we can now definitely recommend Evening Star Cafe for brunch. The menu boasted competitive prices for the area, and there wasn’t a shortage of options. Al was happy to see her brunch staple, the Eggs Benedict, and took no time deciding on her meal. I wasn’t as swift to decide, and spent a healthy minute convincing myself the a trip to the gym would warrant ordering the Chicken and Waffles. In the end, it was a great choice (though I gave the gym some of my time to feel better about it…). We also ordered the hash browns on the side, which was easily a highlight of the meal. Served “pancake” style rather than cubed and mixed with onions, the hash browns were gooey and a small plate of potato heaven. Totally worth the $2.50.
As for drinks, we decided to go with the Bloody Mary garnished with grilled cheese and bacon and a Blood Orange Mimosa, which was a great twist on the regular Champagne Fizz that so many places offer. Both of these are musts before getting your food. They offer a variety of cocktails, beers, and wines as well, though we recommend coupling your brunch with tradition and giving their Bloody Mary a chance.
Evening Star Café is easily a spot we’ll go again. Their decor is one of a kind with very unique artwork covering the walls and what looks like mini theater lights suspended from the ceiling. We are eager to check our their dinner atmosphere and ensure this wasn’t a one hit wonder.
Have you been there in the past? Any other favorites in Del Ray we should be checking out?
Cheers!
