Flying Fish: An Old Town Alexandria Speakeasy
“$2.37 for a California roll!?!”
This is exactly what Al was repeating as we left Flying Fish Restaurant in Old Town, Alexandria on Friday night. Neither of us had actually ever been to this restaurant before, so we were looking for a new place to grab a cocktail. Flying Fish met all the requirements. Since we were a little late getting back from work, we found that happy hour at Flying Fish extends to 8pm, giving us plenty of time to enjoy some special deals.
We opted to head downstairs to the speakeasy room. Flying Fish offers a sushi bar in a small upstairs space, but when you head downstairs there is a wonderfully hidden speakeasy which is accompanied by several tables, a long bar, and incredible group of bartenders. One of them, Jimmy, immediately came over to us after we picked a table by the bar and quickly proved to us we were in the right place. I’m sure we’ll be mentioning Jimmy many more times to come, as we’ll certainly be heading back. For now I’ll say he’s the guy with the spiked hair. He’s also a bartender whose charisma and dynamic personality will ensure you remain put for at least a few hours.
Our seats next time…. |
As I said, we managed to make it in time for happy hour. I insisted that Al try a French 75, which she hadn’t in the past, and I went for the usual Gin and Tonic. Along with the drinks, we ordered some sushi and chicken lollies, all of which came with the great benefit of happy hour prices. Let me remind you, “$2.37 for the California Roll!”
We’re always pushing people to try out some of the locations that they would normally just walk by, and for some this is that exact place. For others familiar with the speakeasy downstairs, this location has a strong following. For us, this is a place we’ll definitely be heading back to with friends.
Cheers!
