Never have Scott and I been more in need of date nights than we are right now. Between closing on the house and prepping the property to host our wedding soirĂ©e next month, we’ve been spending every waking moment up to our foreheads in lawn equipment and gardening tools. Not to mention, budgeting every penny and trying not to splurge excessively.

But splurge we did a couple weeks ago on our trip to Buffalo to pick up our invitations (by the fabulous Gina of Pretty Sugar Co. – check her out!) and she suggested we check out Angelica Tea Room before heading to Casa Azul. So after we celebrated being one step closer in the wedding process with cocktails at Angelica (that post to come!) we walked down the street and made ourselves comfortable outside at one of the patio tables.

I’m going to get this out of the way right now: cricket brittle???  It’s not just Casa Azul – so many Mexican restaurants in DC tried to spice up their guac with a bit o’ cricket. But I just don’t get it, I really don’t. What is the cricket situation? Little additional flavor, and I get all the crunch I need from the chips. As a guacamole connoisseur, I adore a little play with the dish: mango salsa, blackbeans, corn, bacon – whatever you want. But if the base isn’t knock-your-socks-off amazing, it’s hard to disguise that with a wacky topper. I wasn’t a fan of Casa Azul’s guacamole, crickets or no crickets. But it was a beauty to photograph…

Of what was I a fan, then? Everything else. Between the two of us, we tried several different tacos,  Tortas, and the Chorizo – my personal favorite. Though the guac was a bit steep in price, I actually felt that the rest of the menu was well designed and the prices reasonable. The tacos all had extremely good flavor, and the Chorizo was definitely a melt-in-your-mouth experience.

Anyone who knows my deep and abiding love for guacamole and my decade of profound adoration will never be surprised when I wax a  touch judgmental l of the green stuff, but I plan on heading back soon to Casa Azul for round #2, and for another chance to sample more of the menu – and the cocktails!

Have you been? And please sound off about this cricket conversation – are you a cricket brittle fan or a guacamole purist? I must know!

Cheers!
