Happy Hour Date: Magnolia’s on King
My ideal Friday involves unwinding at a local bar with a cocktail in hand. These are not feelings that Alix and I always share. Being a teacher can result in long weeks, so her plans often involve wanting to pour a glass of sparkling wine and relax on the couch. Therefore, you can understand how pleasantly surprised I was last week when Alix told me to pick a cocktail bar because we were going out.
With the exception of a couple bars and lounges in Old Town Alexandria, we often feel that great cocktails aren’t always easy to find. The addition of Magnolia’s on King has drastically improved our options. We haven’t been able to stay for dinner yet, but the drinks continue to draw us back.
The Palm Lounge at Magnolias is led by Zachary Faden who, in previous years, had stints at the Columbia Room and Rogue 24. From the Magnolia’s Old Fashioned with pineapple syrup and a burned pineapple, to the Gaia which includes pistachio orgeat beet juice, you just can’t go wrong.
As for the setting, the leather couches, fireplace, and windows overlooking King Street are perfect. If the lounge area is already taken, the bar offers an intimate chance to converse with the genius behind each cocktail.
When we pull up seats at a bar we’re looking to try something we can’t do at home. We don’t need to continuously try the best, but we do want to experience something unique. Magnolia’s on King has constantly shown us their talent, and we’ll be back very soon.
Have you been?
