Date Night: Farmers Fishers Bakers
Out-of-town guests are always a great excuse to make reservations at a Washington, DC restaurant we’ve been wanting to try. After being impressed with Founding Farmers a couple months ago, we decided to take my sister to Farmers Fishers Bakers with high hopes that it would live up to our expectations.
You might be thinking “You haven’t been to Farmers Fishers Bakers, yet?” As shocking as it may seem our only other trip resulted in us selecting another restaurant because brunch was the only option at that time of day. We left that afternoon noting that we’d be back for the appealing menu that included three of our favorite words: “table side guacamole”.
Farmers Fishers Bakers represents another farm-to-table restaurant in the area, and this one goes as far as including several housemade ingredients for cocktails. After providing us with some details about the concept our server (Galina – she was incredible!) reviewed several of her menu favorites for our consideration. Starting with the drink menu there is something for everyone. The Tiki drinks, specifically the classic recipes of Trader Vic’s and Don the Beachcomber’s Mai Tai, grabbed our attention right off the bat. Both won points with us depending on the style you’re looking for, however, if you want the unique glass go with Don the Beachcomber’s version.
Just about as fast as we could order our drinks we also blurted out “guacamole!” After receiving multiple comments on twitter we also started with the Brick Oven Pretzels. We have to agree and thank those who recommended these dishes – passing on the same to any of you when you visit.
The main courses are divided into several categories making it easier to maneuver your way through a complex menu. My sister ordered the Steak Frites, which comes smothered with french fries, mushrooms, and a whiskey sauce. For someone who wouldn’t normally order mushrooms she loved them with everything else on the plate.
Al was torn between some of the pizzas and the Roasted Vegetable Avocado and Brie sandwich. Great and knowledgeable staff can always help direct diners in the right direction, this was one of those times. The recommendation was for the sandwich and it turned out being the right one on this evening. Capping things off I ordered the Crispy Chicken Tenders with street corn and thick cut onion rings.
When a restaurant masters cocktails, appetizers, and entrees it’s the perfect reason to go back, and that’s something we’ll be doing this summer. Farmers Fishers Bakers did nothing wrong in our book.
Cheers!
