As we have mentioned, Scott and I are from rural Western New York. Though we adore our hometown beyond compare, our palettes were most defined by local pizza and wing joints. Upscale meant a night at TGI Fridays, and our default steakhouse was the Outback Steakhouse located 45 minutes away from home.

Needless to say, the times have changed in WNY (thankfully).  Even so,  we are continually surprised by the restaurant scene in DC and how much it challenges our traditional upbringing. We love it, as much as we love STK in Washington, DC.

Two months ago we were invited to STK’s opening event and it was undoubtedly a night to remember. However, the throngs of people at the event were challenging to navigate and therefore we only got a small taste of the restaurant (pun intended). Fortunately, we recently had the opportunity to head back for a smaller gathering and a more intimate look at the vision of STK.

STK-1 STK-8

STK (situated in the Dupont Circle neighborhood) is not your average steakhouse. From the fresh, modern lines of the decor to the edgy cocktails, STK is more of a destination than a restaurant. This time around, Scott and I were able to peruse the layout and get a better sense of the space and the ambiance. The bar is well designed, backed by a wall of 3-D tusks that accentuate the edge and flirtation of the place. Right next to the bar is a DJ booth, which promises to be the highlight of an evening in the Lounge. Both times, Scott and I left commenting on the dance and music selection, which is a rare and welcomed addition to the DC restaurant scene.

The cocktails are unforgettable and completely set the stage for the sophisticated menu. Though I am always up for a glass of bubbly, Scott had no problem indulging in the District Darling (and totally owning it) and the sip I scored was perfection. Scott also tried the Cucumber Stiletto Martini, a fresh alternative to the typical and mundane martini family.

Though we haven’t had a complete dinner, we can vouch personally for the tuna tartar, the lil’BRGRS (our FAVORITE!), and the most delectable Parmesan fries you can get your hands on.  We are looking forward to really experiencing the best STK has to offer by getting back for dinner soon and giving the dish whose title reflects the restaurant’s name a fair assessment.

STK-10 STK-11 STK-7

STK is not only for the professional crowd at Happy Hour (which is a perfect spot)  but this doubles as the perfect date night for a cocktail dress-type of occasion. It’s fun, it’s edgy, it’s flirtatious, and it is anything but your typical steakhouse.

STK is currently open for dinner (5-11 weekdays, 5-12 weekends) but will be expanding the hours of operation soon to include lunch.

Let us know what you think!
