Growing up in North Buffalo, I must’ve driven by The Steer on Main Street at least 1,000 times before I ever went there. In college, it was known as the UB bar. I remember not even realizing they had a dining room.

Now as a young 20-something with a craving for healthy dinners (but not always wanting to drive somewhere far) The Steer fits perfectly. It’s great mixed use space and on a weeknight, the bar is quiet as can be, making for a cozy dinner date. The love affair started on a cold winter day last year when my now-boyfriend asked me to go there on our first date. Fast forward a year and it’s become our favorite dinner spot!

Located at 3151 Main Street in Buffalo, right next to Lake Effect Diner (which I also highly recommend), you’ll see the flames of the torches from the outside patio flicker as you drive by.

You go in and you’re immediately greeted with a large rustic wooden bar and open kitchen in the back. The dining space is located in a separate room with a fireplace and string lights adding to the warm living room-like atmosphere.

What I love most about The Steer (other than it being a three-minute drive from my house) is a number of healthy options on the menu. They have also have a variety of  vegan, gluten free or dairy free options.

I think my favorite part of the menu has to be their craft burgers. You pick your patty- veggie, beef, chicken or shrimp – and choose from an array of topping combinations. My favorite is the Balsamic: caramelized onion, mushroom and mozzarella which I sometimes sub for goat cheese. Dave likes the Elvis with peanut butter, bacon, honey and banana. Before you knock it, try it! It’s surprisingly good.

Then I discovered the best salad I’ve ever had a few weeks ago – arugula, pan seared goat cheese, peppered tofu, caramelized pears, carrots, pomegranate seeds and balsamic dressing. Sadly, it’s on their specials menu so I’m hoping it stays for a while. To this day, I put pomegranate seeds in my salad at home now!

So even if it’s not a three minute drive for you, I definitely say it’s worth checking out.  I can honestly say this is my go-to place when I’m in the mood for a mid-week pick me up. It’s relaxing, it’s homey and the staff is wonderful. The amazing food is just a perk ;) signature
