The rumors are true: there is more to New York wine than just the Finger Lakes. Thanks to Lockport’s Freedom Run Winery there’s an easy argument for traveling to Western New York on your next tour.

freedomrunwinery-10There are a few wineries on the Niagara Wine Trail that Alix and I haven’t visited yet, a couple we visit yearly, and those that we visit often – and if I had my choice,  Freedom Run would be my second home.

In Virginia, we became accustomed to a wine tasting that involved more than just a quick flight. We would go in the afternoon with lunch and share a glass or bottle while hanging out with friends. After our move we learned that’s not a universal approach. On the Niagara Wine Trail, while some cater to those who might want to spend the afternoon, most assume groups will experience the tasting and move on. We’ve found Freedom Run to be one of the few options for guests who want to kickback on the couch or the outdoor patio.

While many things can make or break a winery trip, the overall tasting experience and the actual wine can determine whether or not you’re going back. Of our double-digit visits to Freedom Run, both of these have been been exceptional. For starters, our tastings have always been spot on. Not only that, but if you catch one of the owners behind the bar, your experience will exceed any expectations you have.

While the experiences have all been wonderful, the real highlight of this winery is the wine itself. From classics to less common varietals, there is truly something for everyone. While New York is commonly known for some whites (Reisling) you should not hesitate in jumping right in with the reds. My favorites include both the Pinot Noir and the Quast Vineyard Pinot Noir, as well as the Meritage and Meritage Appassamento. The only issue becomes which ones I’ll have to leave for the next trip. Don’t fret if you’re just coming around to red wines, there’s something for you. Both the Conspiracy and Freedom Red are slightly lighter in the tannin department, and will be easy far more approachable for some.

Moving along, don’t sleep on the sweet wines. The ice wine label alone, which is individually designed, is worth a spot on any shelf. The port-style wine, Recioto, and Apple Jack, are also all worth the purchase and all are currently part of our collection.

Freedom Run Winery is one of our favorites, and as long as they keep doing what they are doing, always will be. Stop by for yourself, and  I will gladly convince Alix that we have to meet you there!

Cheers!
