A long time ago, people asked us when we were going to get married. And then the presumption turned to children, and so we got asked those questions, too. But ever since we moved back home, those questions have taken a back seat to the #1 question we are asked in WNY:

“Are you changing the name of the blog?”

I could dance around the answer, but plainly and simply the answer is:

No.

So let me tell you why:

When we started the blog, it was out of convenience to name it after our surroundings. Had we ever imagined it would take off and turn into my full time job, or that we would move only 3 years later, we would never have tied our idea to a location. For those of you thinking of starting a blog, NEVER EVER EVER EVER limit yourself to geography.  Unless that is your sole purpose, the ability to transfer your work will limit you greatly.

But larger than our love of DC was the concept, the purpose of starting the blog. In a DC Minute was born to hold us accountable when I joined Scott in the Capital. Personally, I had spent the last decade moving around and always leaving a place having not taken advantage of all it had to offer. At 30 years old, I decided that had to end. I wanted to date DC as much as I wanted to date Scott – I wanted to dine in all the restaurants, wander through all the museums, and stroll as often as I could around the National Mall or the beautiful streets in Old Town.

DC Minute is not about a place – it’s about making sure you never take for granted the place you call home – be it a temporary or permanent residence, apartment or sprawling green aces.

So I give you the following ideas for which we can now consider “DC” to represent:

  • Dating Couple
  • Drinking Champagne
  • Ducks and Chickens (I think we should get both for the farm. We have a pond, after all)
  • Diapers and Caviar (what motherhood is about, right?)
  • Dudes and Chicks
  • Dating and Cuddling
  • Donuts and Coffee
  • Dogs and Cows (future addition to the farm, too?)
  • Dancing and Clapping
  • Delightful Cookies
  • Drywall and Carpet (a renovator’s guide)
  • Drinking Cocktails

“DC” can be whatever you want it to be. For us, it’s fond memories of a life we lived to the fullest in Virginia and Washington, as well as the inspiration to continue to explore our new (old) home in Western New York. The content of the blog will shift along with us as our lives shift, but the purpose will stay the same.

And if I did have to change the name, it’d be Goats and Guacamole – my two greatest passions. ;)
