With an abundance of events kicking off our favorite month of October, we had to share some of the things we might be doing around town. From Oktoberfest events to some special happy hour deals, this fall is really starting off in a big way. Not to mention baseball games are being played in both Baltimore and DC this October – go NATS!

Before heading to events this weekend, you’ll need to find the perfect Friday happy hour to kick things off. STK is just the place! This Friday, they are offering a happy hour oyster promo from 4pm-7pm. During the first hour you can purchase $1 oysters and $4 glasses of Prosecco, the second hour $1.50 oysters and a $5 glass, and the third hour offers $2 oysters and $6 glasses, make sure to get there early! $7 Belvedere cocktails and glasses of wine are also on the menu during the period.

Oktoberfest is here! Shirlington’s Capitol City Brewing Company will be hosting the 15th Annual Mid-Atlantic Oktoberfest on October 4th, from noon-7pm. The weather should be great for some pumpkin beers this weekend, take a look at the full line up of participants then rush over on Saturday. Al will be there – say hello!

Until October 12th, Rosa Mexicano is celebrating their 30th anniversary with a special menu. Since we are both in our 30th year, we plan to celebrate Friday night with dinner at their Penn Quarter location. Look for our review to come…

Among other things in October, it’s National Seafood Month! Grillfish is offering specials all month, including a different catch of the day every day. Grillfish is the first Washington, DC restaurant to partner with Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program and agreed to only serve fish that has been harvested and farmed in environmentally friendly ways.

Chef Richard Sandoval restaurants honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month from October 6-31 by donating $1 from the featured drink, Pink Ribbon Agua Fresca, to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. El Centro, DF, Zengo, Toro Toro, and Masa 14 are all participating restaurants.

From October 10-16, the West End Cinema will be the location of the 2014 Reel Independent Film Extravaganza. The week long event will be full of events and should be added to your can’t miss list.Ticket prices range from $11 at the door to $45 for an entire week pass (discounts apply for K-12).

If quality live entertainment is what you seek, take our advice and get tickets to Three Sistahs at MetroStage in North Old Town, Alexandria. Read our review, and then get yourself to the theater!

Bang Salon, the full-service Washington, DC hair salon, will host a 12-hour marathon hair Cut-A-Thon on Sunday, October 5 from 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. at Bang’s soon-to-open location (opening Friday the 3rd!) at The Yards lifestyle complex at 1212 4th St, SE. Stylists will be available to offer their services to support ovarian cancer education and awareness with 100 percent of proceeds from every haircut donated to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. I have a personal story with ovarian cancer, and have watched a family member fight and win this battle. I think it is time to get my hair cut….

We enjoyed our experience last week at Jaleo Crystal City’s 10th Anniversary celebration, and are excited to spread the word that the Bethesda location is putting on a two week Paella Festival Oct. 6th-19th.
